I was at Gerb’s Grocery store this evening getting stuff to make ice cream sundaes. I was walking past the doors of ice cream when I saw that one of the containers read “Double Chin”. I did a double take (I was frankly impressed by their level of honesty, but somewhat suspicious… can you blame me?) and saw that, in fact, the carton read “Double Churn” and was instantly relieved. But then I began to reflect on the ‘what if’?
What if it really had read that? What if our advertising were more honest? We’re easily the most obese nation in the world (and I’m guilty of that myself). I heard (from Rob Bell) that if Americans gave all of the money we spend in one year on ice cream, we could ensure that every person in the world had access to clean water. Ice cream. It’s not like I said ‘cars’ or ‘gasoline’ or ‘Tony’s pizzas’ or anything like that. Ice cream. We all love ice cream, but I’m not sure that we can say that we need it, that it’s good for us, by any stretch of the imagination. And water… such a basic necessity we take for granted. How many of us are careful to make sure the dishwasher is full before we run it? To shut off the faucet while we’re brushing our teeth? How many of us take our (relatively speaking) clean, drinkable water and run it through a Brita filter so it’s ‘fit’ for us to drink? Double Chin indeed… if only our advertisements really did reflect our excesses.
And yeah, I know… it’s unreasonable to think I’ll ever see that on an ice cream box. But a guy can dream, right?
yeah, i get this. i got this before, but i think i even get it more now, being away from some of those things that we don’t even think about– we take for granted in our daily routine.
btw, i like this idea for a blog.
